National Grid is celebrating five years of successful operation of its IFA2 interconnector — the 1GW high voltage direct current (HVDC) electricity link which is enabling secure and cleaner electricity to flow between Great Britain and France. IFA2 demonstrates in practice how cross border links strengthen resilience and energy security in both countries.

Cable manufacturer Prysmian has been awarded a £2bn contract to supply the cable for National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Energy Networks subsea Eastern Green Link 4 project.

The contract will see Prysmian manufacture and deliver over 640km of cable for the 2GW subsea electricity link, which will use high voltage direct current (HVDC) to connect Fife in Scotland and Norfolk in England.

Once completed in 2033, it will be capable of transporting enough green electricity to power more than 1.5 million homes.

Developed in collaboration with Atos, a global leader in AI-powered digital transformation, Triton will enable National Grid to accelerate how it plans the future electricity network and support the significant increase in energy demand required to achieve Great Britain’s decarbonisation goals.

National Grid will partner with TenneT Germany to develop GriffinLink, a new multi-purpose interconnector (MPI) project, which could connect British and German offshore wind to both countries. It marks a step towards a more integrated, flexible, and efficient energy system for both Great Britain and Germany which delivers secure, affordable energy for consumers.

Jenny joined National Grid four years ago in an admin support role for the Bramford to Twinstead Reinforcement. Before that, she was an office manager for a training company. She explained that her career hasn’t followed a straight path.

“I knew I wanted a change from my previous job, as there weren’t many development opportunities, and I wanted more of a career after I had my son,” Jenny said.
