Supporting local skills and future careers across North London
As part of the North London Reinforcement project, National Grid are working with local schools and colleges to support young people, develop skills and help inspire future careers in the energy and construction sectors.
Working with colleges and employers
National Grid recently joined local employers at New City College’s STEM Employer Open Forum, engaging with over 140 students studying electrical, construction and engineering‑related courses. Students had the opportunity to speak directly with employers, learn about apprenticeships and work experience, and receive feedback on their CVs to help prepare for the next steps in their careers. This activity supports our ongoing infrastructure upgrades in Hackney and reflects our commitment to working with local education providers.
Inspiring young people in Hackney
National Grid colleagues also volunteered at Excelsior Academy in Hackney, supporting an employability programme delivered with Inspire for over 40 Year 9 students who are at risk of becoming not in education, employment or training (NEET).
The sessions focused on building confidence, teamwork and workplace skills, helping students feel better prepared for future education, work experience or apprenticeships.
Celebrating apprenticeships in Haringey
To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2026, National Grid attended an event at Capital City College’s Haringey campus, providing careers advice and support on CVs, interviews and career pathways. The event also helped strengthen partnerships with local colleges and businesses.
Leaving a positive legacy
Through the North London Reinforcement project, we are committed to leaving a lasting legacy by supporting local skills, working with education partners and creating opportunities for young people in the communities where we work.
