Local football team scores Community Grant Programme funding to upgrade its facilities

It’s wins all round as CPD Penrhyndeudraeth football club celebrates the news that it has secured funding from National Grid’s Community Grant Programme.

CPD Penrhyndeudraeth FC – nicknamed “The Cockles” – is the local football team for Penrhyndeudraeth, which neighbours Minffordd, where our Tunnel Boring Machine ‘Buddug’ started her tunnel excavation journey last year.

The club has been awarded £15,838 from the Community Grant Programme, which will be used to help install new fencing around the edge of the club playing area. This will improve the safety and accessibility of the club’s facilities for local residents, visitors and community groups to enjoy.

Speaking about being awarded the funding, Barry Evans, general committee member of CPD Penrhyndeudraeth, said:

“We are very grateful to National Grid for supporting this project. The new fencing and accessible gate will make a real difference by improving safety and ensuring the space can be accessed and enjoyed by everyone.”

Steve Ellison, Senior Project Manager for Eryri VIP said:

“We’re really pleased that CPD Penrhyndeudraeth has been awarded this funding to carry out essential upgrades to its facilities. Our Community Grant Programme has been specially designed to support communities near our operations, so it’s great to be able to help this local football club create a safer playing area for the team and the wider community.”

The Community Grant Programme is aimed at community organisations and charities in areas affected by National Grid’s operations and construction activities.

The next window for applications to the Community Grant Programme will open in April 2026. Further information about how to apply is available on National Grid’s website at: https://www.nationalgrid.com/community-grant-programme
