A huge 271.5 -tonne tunnel boring machine has begun its journey to construct a 2.2km tunnel beneath the River Thames, marking a major milestone for National Grid’s Grain to Tilbury project.

Weighing the equivalent of a fully loaded Boeing 777 aeroplane, the machine named Caroline was launched today by Energy Minister Michael Shanks. The TBM will excavate the tunnel that forms a critical part of the new infrastructure supporting the electricity network.

Dan arweiniad Steve Ellison, Uwch Reolwr Prosiect Darpariaeth Effaith Weledol Eryri, Bryony Brown, y Peiriannydd Prosiect Twnnel a Paul Neary, Goruchwyliwr y Prosiect, dechreuodd yr ymweliad gyda chyflwyniad yng Nghanolfan Wybodaeth y Prosiect. Rhoddodd hyn rywfaint o gyd-destun i’r myfyrwyr am brosiect Darpariaeth Effaith Weledol Eryri, yn ogystal â gwybodaeth am yr hyn y dylent ddisgwyl ei weld ar safle’r prosiect.

Yna, cafodd y myfyrwyr daith gerdded o amgylch safle Minffordd, lle cawsant gyfle i ddysgu mwy am weithrediad prosiect peirianneg mawr o ddydd i ddydd.

Led by Eryri VIP Senior Project Manager Steve Ellison, Tunnel Project Engineer Bryony Brown and Project Supervisor Paul Neary, the visit started with a presentation at the Project Information Centre. This provided the students with some context about the Eryri VIP project and information about what they should expect to see on the project site.

The students were then given a walking tour around the Minffordd site, where they got to learn more about the day-to-day operation of a large-scale engineering project firsthand.

Emerald AI, EPRI, National Grid, Nebius, and NVIDIA today announced a landmark, UK-first demonstration proving high-performance AI infrastructure can operate as a flexible, grid-responsive asset. Using Emerald AI’s software, Emerald Conductor, to manage a cluster of NVIDIA GPUs, the trial validated that artificial intelligence data centres can dynamically adjust power consumption in response to real-time signals, without disrupting critical workloads.

CPD Penrhyndeudraeth – neu “The Cockles” – yw’r tîm pêl-droed lleol ym Mhenrhyndeudraeth, sydd drws nesaf i Finffordd, ble dechreuodd ein Peiriant Tyllu Twneli ‘Buddug’ ei siwrne cloddio twnnel blwyddyn ddiwethaf.

The club has been awarded £15,838 from the Community Grant Programme, which will be used to help install new fencing around the edge of the club playing area. This will improve the safety and accessibility of the club’s facilities for local residents, visitors and community groups to enjoy.

National Grid has completed work to upgrade overhead electricity transmission lines north of its Harker substation near Carlisle, strengthening a key cross‑border link that powers homes and businesses in England and Scotland.

Delivered in partnership with principal contractor Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, the work forms part of National Grid’s wider Harker upgrade project. This includes building new 400kV and 132kV indoor substations adjacent to its existing site, enabling new connections and helping to future-proof the network in the region.
