Planning approval secured for three substations to strengthen electricity network from South Yorkshire to East Midlands
- Planning permission has now been granted for all three new substations needed as part of National Grid’s Brinsworth to Chesterfield and Chesterfield to High Marnham projects.
- The projects form part of The Great Grid Upgrade, National Grid’s programme to upgrade the electricity network across England and Wales.
- The projects will help make sure the grid has the capacity to meet growing demand for electricity from homes and businesses in the Midlands and beyond.
The approvals are an important step in National Grid’s plans to upgrade the electricity transmission network between South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
Substations play a vital role in the electricity network, helping to manage the flow of power so it can be safely and reliably moved to where it is needed.
The substations will support proposed upgrades to the existing overhead lines, helping more clean, home-grown energy from more affordable sources reach homes and businesses in the Midlands and beyond. With electricity demand expected to grow as homes, businesses, transport and new technologies increasingly rely on cleaner power, the upgrade will help strengthen the network for the future.
Following extensive consultation, years of planning, and detailed design work, National Grid has been granted permission for three new substations - High Marnham, in Nottinghamshire, Long Lane, in Whiston, and a new substation near Chesterfield.
High Marnham substation was the first to be approved, with permission granted by Bassetlaw District Council in June. Long Lane substation was approved by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, and the substation near Chesterfield, was given a go ahead by North East Derbyshire District Council, both in July.
