Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor visits New Cross site, part of London Power Tunnels 2 (LPT2) project

In March 2026, Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and the Fire Service, visited the London Power Tunnels 2 (LPT2)’s New Cross site. Mr Pipe’s visit was an opportunity to update him on the project’s progression and how crucial this infrastructure is to ensure a safe, reliable, and resilient energy supply for London going forward.

Launched in 2020, LPT2 is a critical infrastructure project designed to reinforce and futureproof the capital’s electricity network, while supporting the UK’s broader transition to net zero. The project involves 32.5 km of tunnels running beneath South London, with modern cable routes replacing older systems originally installed in the 1960s.

During his visit, Mr Pipe was given a tour of the New Cross site tunnels, 35 meters under the capital, and provided an update on recent works.

During his trip Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and the Fire Service, said:

LPT 2 is an impressive, engineering story. It is also a climate story, about how we change to using more renewable energy. Finally, it is a London story which ensures people and communities have the power that they need to get on with their lives.
