Connections Reform is one of the most significant changes to Great Britain's electricity connections process in decades.
Led by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and approved by Ofgem, it replaces the historic 'first come, first served' approach with a framework that prioritises projects that are ready to progress and needed by the electricity system, supporting delivery of national economic growth, energy security and clean power aims.
Over recent years, a significant backlog of projects seeking to connect to the electricity network built up across Great Britain.
The combined transmission and distribution connections queue grew to around 726 GW of capacity, far exceeding the amount required to achieve the UK's clean power ambitions. Many projects faced long wait times, whilst viable developments were often delayed by projects that were not progressing.
The industry has now entered the delivery phase of Connections Reform, with customers now starting to receive revised connection offers.
NESO and network operators analysed thousands of project submissions to identify those that are both ready to progress and aligned with future energy system requirements. As a result, a new connections delivery pipeline containing approximately 283 GW of projects has been established.
The energy industry is committed to providing greater transparency as Connections Reform progresses.
The Energy Networks Association (ENA) publishes an industry-wide dashboard showing progress against key milestones and offer delivery timelines across transmission and distribution networks.
