visit to NG Crayford Headhouse site

Daniel Francis MP visits National Grid’s Crayford Headhouse site as works near completion on £1 billion London Power Tunnels 2 (LPT2) project

On Tuesday 19 August 2025, Daniel Francis, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, visited London Power Tunnels 2 (LPT2)’s Crayford Headhouse site. Mr Francis’s visit was an opportunity to update him on the LPT2 project works and illustrate how its development is key to ensuring a safe, secure, efficient and reliable electricity transmission network for London for the future.

Launched in 2020, LPT2 is a critical infrastructure project designed to reinforce and futureproof the capital’s electricity network, while supporting the UK’s broader transition to net zero. The project involves 32.5 km of tunnels running beneath South London, with modern cable routes replacing older systems originally installed in the 1960s.

During the visit, Mr Francis was given a tour of the Crayford site and recent works. The LPT2 team also provided him with an overview of the history of the project and updated him on National Grid's commitment to community outreach in the areas that LPT2 operates in, as part of the Community Grand Programme (CGP).

During his trip Daniel Francis, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, said

Visiting the LPT2 Crayford Headhouse site highlighted the importance of reinforcing the electricity transmission network across London. It was great to see that this critical infrastructure important project is nearing completion. I was also struck by the positive impacts of the funding from the National Grid Community Grant Programme (CGP) for communities in Bexleyheath and Crayford and encourage local organisations to continue applying.

This visit came following the LPT2 project hitting a major milestone, in June 2025, with the energisation of the second of two high voltage circuits between Hurst and Crayford. This new 2.5 km stretch of 275 kV cables is now fully commissioned, marking a significant step towards securing London’s energy future.

As we approach the end of LPT2’s project construction, works to upgrade and reinstate the original access track to the Crayford site are currently taking place, resulting in the closure of the adjacent footpath from late June to September 2025.
