Churchill

Work at Churchill substation is complete

We are working with Western Power Distribution (WPD) to make significant changes to its local electricity network by removing 67 kilometres of existing overhead line and pylons.

WPD and its contractor completed work to upgrade the existing substation at Churchill and to modify the electricity network to the east of the substation in July 2020, hitting a milestone in our programme to build the Hinkley Connection Project.

The upgrades reinforce the local electricity network in the South West region before we remove the existing WPD lattice pylons from Bridgwater to Avonmouth.

Modify the existing 132,000 volt overhead lines to the east of Churchill substation

This work was completed by WPD.

Work carried out:

  • Connected Churchill substation to the existing overhead line to the east.

  • Installed a small section of underground cable and replaced an existing pylon with a new cable sealing end (CSE) pylon, to join the existing overhead line to the new underground cable.

  • Removed the temporary construction compound, haul road and entrance, and reinstated the land.

The work at Churchill will maintain and reinforce the security of the electricity network in the South West, following the removal of the 132,000 volt overhead line (owned by WPD) from Bridgwater to Avonmouth.
