Responsible resources
We aim to responsibly manage our impact on the environment through minimising pollution, handling our waste responsibly and being conscious of our water usage.
Water
Our water consumption is almost entirely related to cooling at our generation facilities in the US. Abstracted seawater is not altered other than being slightly warmed by the process.
This year, 1,134 million cubic meters were withdrawn, and over 99% was discharged back to the sea.
Waste
Many of our business processes create waste, including cleaning up former manufactured gas plant sites, retiring old fossil fuel assets and leak prone equipment, building new grid infrastructure and supporting renewable energy projects. We ensure that waste generated from these activities is correctly disposed of, in alignment with the appropriate environmental permits and compliant with applicable regulatory standards.
Some of the waste that we produced is classified as hazardous waste. This waste is generated through the removal of contaminated soils during property activities and the disposal of oil and materials that contain polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) or lead.
- Over 80% of our total waste is reused or recycled.
- Other disposal methods include thermal processing, incineration and landfilling.
- We also have initiatives to support a circular economy by reusing, reselling, and recycling surplus assets.
