Wallend team joins local celebrations at Isle of Grain Fete

In July 2026, the Wallend project team joined local residents at the Isle of Grain Fete and Carnival, one of the village's longest-running and most popular community events.

Alongside project partners Balfour Beatty, our team hosted a stand packed with activities for visitors of all
ages. Younger attendees put their skills to the test with a buzz wire challenge, while the popular PPE selfie station gave children the chance to dress up in safety equipment and take a photo.

Visitors could also find out more about the Wallend Substation project through information displays and
pick up careers leaflets showcasing opportunities across National Grid.

The event formed part of our ongoing commitment to engaging with communities on the Isle of Grain, providing an opportunity for residents to learn more about the project, meet members of the team and ask questions in an informal setting. Throughout the day, the team had many positive conversations about the Wallend Substation project.

The stand also helped raise awareness of the diverse roles involved in delivering major infrastructure projects, giving young people and their families an insight into the skills and careers needed to support the UK's future energy network.

Toyin Boateng, Graduate Associate EPC Project Manager at National Grid, who attended the fete, said:

It was great to be part of such a well-supported community event and to spend time speaking with local residents in an i formal setting. We had lots of positive conversations throughout the day, both about the Wallend project and the exciting career opportunities available within the energy sector.

Events like the Isle of Grain Fete and Carnival play an important role in helping us build relationships within the communities we work in. We look forward to continuing these conversations as the project progresses and to supporting
future community events across the Isle of Grain.
