National Grid Hosting Events in Late October and November to Cover Energy Insights, Bill Assistance, and New Tiered-Discount Program

WALTHAM, MA – National Grid’s statewide Customer Assistance events will visit nine counties across Massachusetts in November, providing in-person opportunities to engage with a customer advocate. These events, which are free and open to the public, will allow customers to get in-person support around bill management and assistance programs, including information on the new tiered-discount rate structure which will begin on November 1, 2026, offering six tiers of support for income-eligible customers.

“We’re proud to have been the first utility in Massachusetts to propose and implement a tiered income-based discount for electric customers and are now extending that approach to our gas customers,” said Bill Malee, Chief Customer Officer at National Grid. “As tiered discounts become available statewide, we’ll add an important tool to improve affordability and help make energy bills more manageable for customers who need support most. Through our recurring monthly customer assistance events and webinars, we’re also able to connect directly with customers, understand their individual needs, and help them navigate the programs and resources available to them.”

In addition to the statewide events, National Grid will also host two virtual sessions over the coming weeks, including a webinar on ‘Smart Meters & Smart Savings’ on October 28th and a winter heating season Bill Assistance webinar on November 30th. The virtual sessions complement National Grid’s statewide roster of in-person assistance events, offering all customers the opportunity to discover programs to help manage their energy use and spending, including the 12-month Budget Plan.

New Tiered Discount Rates to Launch November 1st

At the in-person and virtual Customer Assistance events, customers can learn about the new  Tiered Discount Rate Program, which will become available to both National Grid’s electric and gas customers in Massachusetts on November 1. The new DPU-approved structure offers income-eligible customers six tiers of discounts which vary based on household size, gross annual income, or if a household member receives benefits from a qualifying benefit program.

National Grid was the first utility in Massachusetts to propose and implement a tiered income-based discount for electric customers and subsequently proposed bringing that approach to its gas customers through its recent gas rate case, ahead of the DPU’s implementation of tiered discounts statewide.

Upcoming Webinars to Highlight Smart Meters, Assistance for Winter Bills

Two upcoming webinars hosted by National Grid offer opportunities for customers to learn about tools and programs that can help them better understand their energy bill and near real-time energy usage, while also learning about assistance programs that can help them manage bills during winter heating season.

Customers are encouraged to register for both virtual events at the links below:

  • The Smart Meters & Smart Savings webinar (October 28, 1-2 p.m.) will show customers how to make the best of the new digital tools that are available to them following the installation of a smart meter. Customers can learn how to gain insight into their near real-time electric use, find opportunities to save, and discover tools to manage their accounts. Customers who cannot attend the live webinar are encouraged to register for the webinar, as space is limited.
  • The Fall Customer Bill Assistance webinar (November 30, 12-1 p.m.) is the next virtual session in National Grid’s campaign to support customers during winter heating season. The company’s Customer Advocates will provide resources to help customers stay warm, save energy, and manage their bills. Customers who cannot attend the live webinar are encouraged to register, as the session recording will be shared after the event.
