National Grid Cuts Ribbon on Innovative Renewable Energy Project at NYC DEP Wastewater Treatment Facility

National Grid and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) cut the ribbon on the Newtown Creek Renewable Energy project, turning wastewater and food scraps into renewable energy to heat homes and businesses and improve air quality. During the ribbon cutting event on June 14, National Grid Chief Operating Officer Ross Turrini delivered remarks along with New York City Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, EPA Region 2 Administrator Lisa Garcia and NYC Chief Climate Officer and DEP Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala. Also in attendance were state and local elected officials and representatives, community members, and a host of dedicated National Grid and DEP employees who have been involved since the inception of the project. National Grid will own, maintain, and operate the biogas conditioning system which cleans up the excess biogas to produce renewable energy which is distributed through the company’s network for direct use by Brooklyn customers.
