We have received a request to provide a new connection for a data centre in the Park Royal area near to the Grand Union Canal. Under our license to operate, we have a legal obligation to connect companies to our network when a connection is requested.

We will be providing this new connection between National Grid’s substations at Willesden and Kensal Green. This requires laying 3km of new cable along the Grand Union Canal towpath using the existing high voltage cable troughs.

Ahead of confirming our programme for the project, technical assessments were required along the towpath. These were carried out by our contractor, J. Murphy & Sons, who – as part of this work – also cleared some overgrown vegetation along the route. Pontoons were placed alongside sections of the towpath to ensure accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians, including wheelchair users and pushchairs. Some additional, minor works will be carried out towards the end of June and pontoons will again be made available for affected sections.

Following our initial survey works, the project team is continuing to analyse the results and we remain in contact with Canal & River Trust to deliver our programme of main works. As part of preparing the work programme, we have applied for a licence to remove and replace the existing cables along the Grand Union Canal towpath between Old Oak and Kensal Green.
