Repurposing around 25% of the current gas transmission pipelines, Project Union will build on the government’s ten-point plan to invest more than £1 billion to unlock the potential of hydrogen and support the establishment of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) in four industrial clusters.

National Grid anticipates the backbone could carry at least a quarter of the current gas demand in Great Britain today, and provide vital resilience and storage.

Since 2018, National Grid’s Hinkley Connection Project, connecting low carbon energy from Hinkley Point C to homes and businesses across the UK, has awarded science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) grants totalling £580,000 to schools in Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucester – the areas closest to the project.

Following the recent receipt of State approvals, New York Transco, which is part-owned by National Grid Ventures, today commenced construction on the first phase of the New York Energy Solution electric transmission project, as announced in a press release by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
