• New research from National Grid reveals 38 per cent of UK adults feel hopeless about climate change and worry about the future of the planet. This is fuelled by an ‘energy awareness gap’ with 42 per cent of Brits mistakenly believing that Britain only gets up to 10 per cent of its electricity supplied by zero and low carbon energy sources. (Actual = 55%)
  • Carbon jargon is making it more difficult for Brits to engage on the issue with many having never heard of terms like carbon neutral (42%) or net zero (61%).

It’s Bat Appreciation Day on Saturday (17 April) and as part of our commitment to caring for the natural environment, National Grid already employs a range of measures to reduce the impact of our work on protected bat species.

On the Hinkley Connection Project – which will connect Hinkley Point C and other low-carbon energy sources to National Grid’s network – measures include the installation of 2.5km of bat flyways, several bat boxes and the construction of one purpose-built home in Mark for them. And now we are taking this commitment even further.

National Grid has awarded the latest funding from its Community Grants Programme (CGP) to Necessary Furniture, a local organisation in Canterbury that refurbishes and recycles donated furniture for families on a low income. The organisation is dependent on a fleet of vans for the collection and delivery of goods. The grant will help the organisation replace an old van, which was coming to the end of its useful life.

Their conversation took place during a recent event hosted by the British Consulate-General Boston, Greentown Labs and the Consulate General of Italy in Boston, entitled ‘Climate Action New England – Road to COP26’. The UK is partnering with climate leaders globally to host regional events to move the needle on climate action in preparation for COP26, of which National Grid is a principal partner.

Contractors working on behalf of National Grid are scheduled to undertake surveys over a period of up to eight weeks in pre-agreed locations just south of Roundway Down and approximately 2km north of Devizes.

The surveys do not signal that construction has begun. Construction work itself is subject to the successful outcome of a planning application that is to be submitted later this year.
