The 140-tonne Herrenknecht TBM, named ‘Christine’ after Christine Townley, the former Executive Director of the Construction Youth Trust, known for her championing of diversity and STEM careers, began its journey at the LPT site in Hurst in July of last year. In total, it has travelled 6.7km underneath London, reaching depths of up to 50m underground in the process.

The substation sits adjacent to the Hinkley Point C construction site and is now transferring energy from Taunton substation to Shurton. Later this year it will also back feed electricity to support the construction of the new power station.

Once Hinkley Point C is completed, Shurton substation will connect the first new nuclear power station in a generation to the UK electricity network – connecting 6 million homes and businesses to low carbon energy.

The project has also submitted a marine licence application to the Marine Management Organisation and Marine Scotland for SEGL1’s 176km submarine cable, the offshore element of the proposed link. National Grid’s grant provided to Life Cycle UK will mean ex-prisoners and low income individuals can afford the cost of the £1,250 City & Guilds Level 2 cycle mechanic course.

Developed and led by the Energy & Utilities Skills Partnership, the aim of the Accord is to create a sustainability skilled sector workforce, by recognising those who invest in skills via procurement and rewarding suppliers in the process.

This also forms a key part of engagement with National Grid’s relevant contractors – primarily from the EPC Framework and is a key commitment in our RIIO-T2 business plan.
