Over the summer, J Murphy and Sons have been working with Willow Gardens, a new community project in Portishead which is being developed on a piece of unused ground in the town centre.

Willow Gardens aims to connect people in the local area and encourage intergenerational and intercultural interactions and learning whilst building a garden and growing vegetables for the whole community to enjoy. It promotes exercise and enjoyment of the outdoors and provides a positive environment for those that are feeling isolated and alone.

The cables are connected to two termination points; one within Sandford substation and the second to a new cable sealing pylon located outside the substation, where the cables join up with the overhead lines.

Temporary scaffolding at the two termination points is being erected and will remain in place until the final connection is ready for testing and energisation in October 2022.

The polecat was found in a tower foundation excavation site and was in need of medical attention. Members of the project team reacted quickly and sought help and guidance from the Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre in Huntspill, who determined that the polecat was domesticated and had likely become lost after having escaped from its home.

St Giles Trust, which helps prevent youngsters falling in with gangs or those who are struggling with financial or addiction issues, received the grant from National Grid’s London Power Tunnels team.

The London Power Tunnels project is a £1 billion project to rewire South London via deep underground tunnels between Wimbledon and Crayford, which will carry high-voltage electricity cables. The project, which kicked off in spring 2020, is keen to support local charities and causes near to where it's carrying out its vital infrastructure works.

National Grid has removed temporary scaffolding at Loxton cable sealing compound near the M5 between junctions 21 and 22. The scaffold was erected to create a sterile environment for specialist engineers to connect the new underground cables to the new line of T-pylons that will help carry low carbon energy to six million homes and businesses.

We are leaving this part of the Area of Outstanding Beauty free of pylons for the first time in 91 years

The project is part of Central Bedfordshire Council’s initiative to support planned housing growth of around 3,000 homes to the east of the town. A traditional ‘breaking the ground’ event marked work starting on National Grid’s 400kV substation and UK Power Networks’ new grid substation, that will increase power capacity in Biggleswade and help the community move towards a low carbon economy.
