Preparatory work began in February this year to remove ten pylons and around 3 kilometres of overheard electricity line, as part of National Grid’s major project to transform views across the Dwyryd Estuary. To date the work has focused on key surveys and site preparation as well as detailed design, but the project will become much more visible in the community from the start of next year.

It’s a commitment that will bring benefits for consumers too, with the clean energy transition the surest route to long-term security of supply, energy resilience and affordability.

As the transmission owner in England and Wales, we work closely with National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) – who facilitates the connections process – to assess what’s needed to fulfil a customer’s connection offer, and then we deliver the works needed to connect them.

The Yorkshire Green Energy Enablement Project is a proposed upgrade and reinforcement of the high-voltage power network, which will allow more low-carbon energy to get to homes and businesses in Yorkshire and further afield. The reinforcement will help deliver the government’s net zero targets to transition to a cleaner, more affordable and more resilient energy system.

Life Cycle UK, a Bristol-based cycling charity, has been awarded two separate £10,000 grants by National Grid’s community grant fund to support their work to increase access to cycling and provide educational bursaries for inmates at HMP Bristol and people on a low income.

As part of National Grid’s commitment to reducing the visual impact of construction works and the permanent structures being built along the route, the team have committed to planting 2,551 trees, 8,500 linear metres of hedgerow, and 50,000 m2 of woodland during the 2022/23 planting season.

The planting season runs from November to March each year and by March 2025 National Grid has committed to planting a total of 6,019 trees, 35,807 linear metres of hedgerow and 261,301 m2 of woodland planting.

The fund will be targeted at charities who provide immediate, emergency financial relief to households using pre-payment energy meters; charities who fund energy efficiency measures to lower bills over the long-term; and charities providing advisory services for households who need help with energy bills, payments and debt.
