PRIDE grows in Brooklyn

After a two-year hiatus of celebrating in-person, revelry was in the air as PRIDE supporters ran, walked, marched, laughed, sang, danced, performed, cheered, watched, donated, promoted, and shared with each other as part of the Brooklyn PRIDE Fair and Parade.

National Grid was one of the sponsors of Brooklyn’s LGBTQIA+ PRIDE Week, including the fair and parade held June 11. Brooklyn Pride is one of the largest and most prominent organizations serving Brooklyn’s LGBTQIA+ community.

LGBTQIA+ is an inclusive term that includes people of all genders and sexualities, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex, asexual, pansexual, and allies. While each letter in LGBTQIA+ stands for a specific group of people, the term encompasses the entire spectrum of gender fluidity and sexual identities.

Talk PRIDE Event

“Being part of this day was one of the best days I’ve had working for the company,” said Adrienne Jones, National Grid PRIDE USA Employee Resource Group lead for New York City and internal organizer of the event. “The people I was with are more than my co-workers, they’re my National Grid brothers and sisters.

“This was a beautiful day in which we created smiles and had real conversations with people. A day like this showed the best of what we can be as a people and a community.”

Jones estimates about 25 colleagues participated in the day’s events.

“I’m very proud of the team showing tremendous support for Brooklyn Pride and continuing our mission of promoting equality in our organization and communities we serve,” added Aaron Choo, National Grid’s vice president of gas field operations and PRIDE Employee Resource Group co-executive sponsor. “We strive to create a work environment where everyone feels respected, valued and empowered to reach their full potential.”

National Grid colleagues had plenty of opportunities to talk PRIDE with members of the community.

National Grid US has received a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2022 Corporate Equality Index (CEI). The CEI is the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality. National Grid has earned this designation for three consecutive years and five times over the last decade.
