National Grid Supports SUNY Adirondack Energy Efficiency Upgrades Across Campus

SUNY Adirondack is advancing its commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency with a series of major energy infrastructure upgrades, supported in part by incentives from National Grid’s Energy Efficiency Program.

The college recently completed a multi-phase modernization of its HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems across several campus buildings, including Washington Hall, Warren Hall and the Student Center. These upgrades are expected to significantly reduce energy consumption, improve system reliability, and enhance comfort for students and staff.

Highlights of the project include:

• Washington Hall HVAC Upgrade: Replaced an outdated chiller and boiler system with high-efficiency rooftop units and condensing boilers, cutting gas use by about 50%.
• Student Center & Warren Hall Improvements: Installed smaller, more efficient boilers and rooftop units, upgraded roofing with better insulation, and switched to a white reflective membrane—expected to reduce gas consumption by half.
• Campus Electrical System Modernization: Replacing the original 1966 electrical infrastructure with modern transformers, switchgear, and feeders. New systems allow building-level energy tracking and isolation, plus added emergency backup power.
• Exterior Lighting Upgrade: Converted campus lighting from high-pressure sodium to energy-saving LEDs, with smart controls that dim or shut off lights after midnight to save energy and extend fixture life.

The improvements align with New York state’s clean energy goals and demonstrate how public institutions can lead by example in building a more sustainable future.
