National Grid Statement on New York State All-Electric Building Act

National Grid wants to make sure that the energy transition provides affordable, safe and reliable energy for the customers, communities and businesses we serve. We believe that electrification will play a cornerstone role in the clean energy transition that is currently underway. That’s why we are working with an array of stakeholders to transform and decarbonize the state’s economy by investing in energy efficiency, renewable energy, transmission upgrades and energy storage.

Currently, there are different proposals under negotiation for the electrification of buildings across New York State. National Grid believes the Assembly’s proposal to electrify new construction to be the most pragmatic approach under consideration because it recognizes the need for a reliable grid, maintaining affordability for all customers and the reliance of some sectors – like hospitals and heavy industries – on other energy sources.

While many older buildings throughout the state can be difficult to electrify, we need to stay on track to meet New York’s climate change goals, while emphasizing the reliability and affordability that is necessary for New Yorkers. We are committed to ensuring our existing customers can maintain the use of the heating systems and appliances that work best for them, and their needs and we will continue to drive energy efficiency across the board.

We encourage our lawmakers to pursue other practical approaches that will help significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while leveraging existing infrastructure maintained by our skilled and dedicated workforce.
