National Grid Sends Electric Crews to Assist in Restoration Efforts Following Hurricane Helene

WALTHAM, MA – National Grid sent 20 electric crews, with a total of 50 employees, to West Virginia today to assist Appalachian Power in electric restoration efforts following extensive infrastructure damage caused by Hurricane Helene.

“National Grid is proud of our employees who will be assisting in restoration efforts in West Virginia,” said Lisa Wieland, President, National Grid New England. “Restoring electricity is essential for the well-being of the thousands there who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene and we appreciate the role our line workers assume as first responders in times of crises such as this one.”

The complexity of power restoration after a catastrophic storm requires significant logistical expertise, along with skilled line workers and specialized equipment, which is why utilities rely on each other for aid. National Grid will typically send crews to assist other utilities following severe storm events as part of its mutual assistance program. Similarly, other utilities from across the country and Canada have sent crews to help National Grid with restoration efforts following major storm events impacting its service areas.

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida Thursday night as a category 4 hurricane, causing flooding and destruction in its wake. As of Friday evening, over four million homes and businesses spanning several southern states remained without power.
