National Grid Prepared for Nor’easter Expected to Bring Wintry Mix to New York Region

BROOKLYN/HICKSVILLE, NY – National Grid’s storm readiness team has been monitoring the weather forecast and preparing to ensure reliability of the energy delivery system as a Nor’easter is expected to bring a wintry mix with heavy wind and rain to the New York region starting tonight.

Natural gas is distributed through an underground system that typically operates uninterrupted, even in severe weather.  National Grid doesn’t anticipate any impacts and has taken steps to respond quickly and safely if needed:

  • Continue to monitor and track the storm
  • Ensure adequate staffing to perform flood patrols if needed
  • Coordinate with emergency management officials

The safety of customers is always the top priority for National Grid and the company encourages customers to be prepared to keep their homes and families safe if needed.

  • Make sure you have a storm emergency kit
  • If you experience flooding, contact a plumbing or heating contractor to make sure your appliances are safe to operate
  • In the event of a gas emergency or if you smell gas call 911 or National Grid’s 24-hour emergency numbers:  for Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island at 718-643-4050; for Long Island and the Rockaway Peninsula at 1-800-490-0045.
