Landmark Achievement
At an Oct. 24 community day in Buffalo’s historic Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, civic leaders celebrated the renovation of four buildings along Broadway between Elm and Michigan Streets.
A significant part of the revitalization includes a new 40-foot mural at 119 Broadway. Already a city landmark that features gold leaf paint that glistens in the sun the artist who painted it, Tyshaun Tyson, described it as a symbol of how progress can be made and goals can be achieved when everyone works together.
The mural depicts a group of multi-colored intertwined hands supporting each other and reaching skyward. The hands symbolize love, community giving and the people of the neighborhood.
The day-long celebration included music, food and entertainment. Representatives from National Grid, plus those from health care companies and other social service organizations were also available to share information about resources to benefit residents.
“We thank National Grid for helping us to celebrate this beautiful day,” said Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Executive Director Terry Alford. “Over the last five years this area has experienced expansion and renovation. We can’t thank National Grid enough for helping to sponsor this beautiful day.”
He likened the mural to a big red bow that ties everything together and represents the accomplishments that have been made to date. He added that the neighborhood is ready to begin the next phase of capital improvements.
“We are seeing significant changes and by nurturing partnerships like the one we have with National Grid will turn this community around,” he said.
