Agreement on new trading arrangements on the NSL interconnector from 2026
After a competitive tender exercise, Nord Pool EMCO has been awarded an agreement as North Sea Link’s service provider from 2026, subject to final regulatory approval.
Since 2021, National Grid and Statnett have partnered with Nord Pool EMCO to run an implicit daily day-ahead auction between Great Britain and Norway. With the current agreement set to expire in September 2026, this new agreement now secures the next phase of North Sea Link operations for a maximum period of 10 years.
Trading will continue to be integrated into Nord Pool EMCO’s auctions in Great Britain and as separate auctions in Norway. This means they will continue to take place outside the common European Electricity Market. The main changes under the new agreement are:
- Access for other Power Exchanges to facilitate trading in Norway
- Establishment of intraday auctions
- 30-minute market time unit – at least in the intraday auctions
National Grid and Statnett are looking forward to continued constructive cooperation with Nord Pool EMCO under this new agreement and are also welcoming other Power Exchanges to take part to help facilitate the future of cross-border electricity trading.
