National Grid supports local organisations with timber donation

Walthamstow Fishery and Lee Valley Riding Centre have received timber donated by National Grid’s North London Reinforcement project (NLR), giving the materials a new purpose in the local community.

Both are valued local facilities, providing places for people to enjoy their hobbies, spend time outdoors and connect with others. As work has progressed in the area, the project team has been looking for opportunities to reuse materials where possible and support organisations in the communities around our works.

The timber was previously used as temporary visual demarcation around two of the project’s overhead line work sites near Hackney. Once it was no longer needed, rather than disposing of useful material that could still be put to good use, the team worked with the two facilities to give it a second life locally. Michael Crabbe, Head of Delivery at National Grid, said:

We’re always looking for ways to make a positive contribution to the communities around our work, so it’s great to see materials from the project being put to good use locally.
“We’re delighted that the timber has found a new home at Walthamstow Fishery and Lee Valley Riding Centre, where it can continue to be used and enjoyed long after it was needed for our work.

The donations are one of the ways NLR is looking to make a positive contribution beyond its construction work. By finding opportunities to support local organisations and reuse materials, National Grid aims to leave a positive legacy for the communities hosting the project.
