Living our values

At National Grid, We Bring Energy to Power Possibilities.

We safely and reliably connect millions of people to the energy they use, while investing at scale to meet rising demand, power economic growth, and deliver resilient networks that are ready for tomorrow. Our values 'Do the right thing', 'Find a better way,' and 'Make it happen' guide every decision we make and every interaction we have.

These values shape our culture, influence how our 30,000 colleagues show up for one another, and determine how our customers and communities experience us. They reflect the spirit, attitude, and behaviours we expect from ourselves as we continue to deliver safe, reliable energy every day – while also building the grid for the future.

At National Grid, our values are not just words on a page. They are visible, lived and celebrated every day.

In 2022, we launched Living our values, a global recognition programme designed to celebrate colleagues who bring our values to life and inspire others through their actions. The campaign invites colleagues across the business to nominate individuals or teams who consistently demonstrate our values and the behaviours that support them.

Our values

Do the Right Thing: When we do the right thing, we create purpose and belonging, we keep each other safe, and put our customers first.

Find a Better Way: When we find a better way, we work together to drive innovation and find solutions for our customers.

Make it Happen: When we make it happen, we take bold steps and calculated risks to drive action, performance and results.

The programme has quickly become one of National Grid's most successful global initiatives. The 2024/25 Living our values campaign reached record levels of participation, receiving more than 4,500 nominations from across the business.

It raised awareness of our values and behaviours, demonstrated how they guide National Grid in acting as a force for good, and surfaced hundreds of real-life examples of colleagues living our values every day – strengthening pride, recognition and a sense of belonging across our organisation.

Some of our winning colleagues include:

Tyler Virkler and Carl Shatraw of the New York Customer Connections team were honoured for their work improving visibility into work order statuses within a work management system. By developing a real-time dashboard and working closely with business experts, they helped reduce the backlog by more than $1 million and closed 6% of open work orders in just one year.

Kerry Burke and Emily Avellar from the Women in Technical Training Team identified critical gaps in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for women. They developed safer, better fitting options – including female-specific climbing harnesses and flame resistant hijabs – enabling more women to pass technical assessments and work confidently in the field.

Andrew Keith, a Safety, Health, Environment and Sustainability (SHES) and Compliance Engineer working in overhead lines (OHL), has been championing men's mental health within a traditionally male-dominated environment. By partnering with Andy's Man Club, he has helped to open up conversations, raise awareness, and create safe spaces for all colleagues to talk, fostering a stronger culture of support and demonstrating an exceptional commitment to doing the right thing.

The Living our values campaign has strengthened National Grid's cultural foundation by:

  • Making our values visible and meaningful
  • Building a culture of recognition and role modelling
  • Increasing pride, belonging and connection through colleague engagement
  • Strengthening strategic alignment across the business
  • Celebrating exceptional behaviours

By recognising real examples of colleagues Living our values, the programme has helped colleagues see how their everyday actions contribute to a culture that is safe, inclusive and focused on delivering positive outcomes for customers and society.

Every tiny detail of what we do matters. But how we do our work matters even more – that's Living our values.
