Eryri VIP project team share a very special Christmas meal

Festive cheer was in full swing on 25 December as the Eryri VIP project team swapped hard hats for party hats, tucking into a traditional festive feast cooked on site by Hochtief UK’s own chef.

While the scheme’s main tunnelling operations and excavation works were paused over the festive period, a small team continued to monitor and maintain Buddug, the project’s Tunnel Boring Machine, as well as complete some minor surface works at the project site.

As a result, Hochtief UK’s accommodation facility at Blaen Cefn remained open over the festive period for the crew who needed to remain on site.

On Christmas Day itself, the facility’s cook, Jeff Laight – known affectionately as ‘Jeff the Chef’ – came into the canteen despite being off duty to prepare a full, traditional Christmas dinner for all the on-site staff.

To ensure everyone was able to sit down to enjoy the meal together, the Christmas dinner was served during the changeover period between shifts in the early evening.

Steve Ellison, Senior Project Manager on Eryri VIP, said: “Some of our tunnelling staff have travelled a long way to work at the Eryri VIP site because of their specialised skills, which are crucial to delivering this project successfully.

“We are very fortunate to have such highly skilled engineers and staff committed to working on the project and we really appreciate the efforts of the team that remained on site over Christmas, working away from their loved ones to keep everything on track.

“Our team essentially become a family during construction, so it was great to see colleagues come together to enjoy a proper festive celebration amid the usual busy project work – and it’s a huge credit to Jeff and his generosity and dedication that he came to the site on Christmas Day and prepared a fantastic meal.”
