National Grid has awarded the latest funding from its Community Grants Programme (CGP) to Necessary Furniture, a local organisation in Canterbury that refurbishes and recycles donated furniture for families on a low income. The organisation is dependent on a fleet of vans for the collection and delivery of goods. The grant will help the organisation replace an old van, which was coming to the end of its useful life.

Their conversation took place during a recent event hosted by the British Consulate-General Boston, Greentown Labs and the Consulate General of Italy in Boston, entitled ‘Climate Action New England – Road to COP26’. The UK is partnering with climate leaders globally to host regional events to move the needle on climate action in preparation for COP26, of which National Grid is a principal partner.

Contractors working on behalf of National Grid are scheduled to undertake surveys over a period of up to eight weeks in pre-agreed locations just south of Roundway Down and approximately 2km north of Devizes.

The surveys do not signal that construction has begun. Construction work itself is subject to the successful outcome of a planning application that is to be submitted later this year.

National Grid is holding a non-statutory public consultation on its proposals to reinforce the electricity network between Bramford, in Suffolk, and Twinstead, in Essex.

As offshore wind generation increases, this project is essential to maintaining the resilience of the UK’s electricity networks and is critical to connect more people across East Anglia, and the UK, to cleaner power. The consultation will open on Thursday 25 March and will run for 6 weeks until Thursday 6 May 2021.

National Grid is set to hold a digital exhibition and run virtual consultations on a proposal for a new energy link that will run from Peterhead in Aberdeenshire to Drax in North Yorkshire. Named the Scotland to England Green Link 2 (SEGL2), it will play an important part in helping the country achieve its net-zero energy commitments.

I’m working on the biggest climate change summit on the planet; National Grid is a Principal Partner of COP26, which is being held in Glasgow this November. I’m leading our COP26 strategy, positioning and engagement, working closely with lots of colleagues across the UK and US to deliver our plans. Our over-arching aim is to help make COP26 a success, so that action is taken globally to achieve a greener future. We have lots of exciting plans and content coming out about it over the next few months.

As part of the preparation for our planning application, we’ve already completed a programme of geophysical surveys, fieldwalking, and metal detecting and made some fascinating discoveries.

Our initial results have identified some possible previously unknown Bronze Age-Romano British features including ring ditches and a trackway.
