A gas compressor in Alrewas, Staffordshire celebrates its 50th birthday this month, making it the longest-serving unit in National Grid’s fleet of 64 compressors – the ‘accelerator pedals’ of the system which keeps Britain warm through the winter.

Compressors increase the pressure of gas by reducing volume to push the fuel around the gas transmission system.

Every state funded primary and secondary school in the local authority areas closest to the project (Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucester) is eligible to apply for a £500 or £1250 (for secondary schools) grant for STEM equipment during every year of the project. Local schools have been invited to submit their applications for the 2020/21 Hinkley Education Fund.

More than 130,000 pupils have benefited from new STEM equipment ranging from programmable robots to 3D printers and everything in between.

National Grid today launches Britain's latest interconnector, IFA2.  The 149-mile-long power cable runs along the sea bed between Portsmouth, Hampshire in the UK and near Caen, Normandy in France sharing surplus clean energy between the two countries.  IFA2 is expected to deliver 1.2% of Britain's electricity needs, enough to power up to 1 million homes with zero carbon energy. By the end of it's first year in operation, IFA2 will have helped avoid 1.2 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, equivalent to planting 50 million trees.
