The energy regulator Ofgem confirmed in December that National Grid will be responsible for the delivery of 17 major onshore electricity transmission projects, which are critical to a more affordable, resilient and clean energy system. This investment is fundamental to the successful delivery of the decarbonization of our electricity system, and will also bring greater security of supply, as well as improved affordability for customers in the long run.
The previous record year was in 2011, when the terminal unloaded 66 ships. Once offloaded at Grain, the LNG is converted to gas and can then be sent out into the National Transmission System (NTS) throughout the UK or exported into Europe to support neighbouring countries.
A GeoPura 250kW hydrogen power unit (HPU) contained within a transportable shipping container measuring 7.2 m by 2.5 m was installed at DCI and produced the energy to power low-voltage equipment needed for National Grid’s innovation testing projects and site operations. The trial tested the capabilities and feasibility of HPUs as direct replacements for backup diesel generators across more than 250 National Grid substation sites, the data will now be analysed and shared later this year.
National Grid is helping schools across the Hinkley Connection Project deliver an improved education experience through its Education Fund by providing activities and equipment which teachers would otherwise not be able to afford.
In 2022 and 2023 the Hinkley Connection Project’s Education Fund supported 103,950 children from 382 local schools, including 22,375 children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Joseph Harvey, substation engineer at National Grid, joins the first cohort of the UK Young Academy, alongside 66 other members announced today (10th January) by UK and Ireland National Academies. As a member of this prestigious new panel, Joseph will have the opportunity to help shape the strategy and focus of the organisation, based on areas that matter to him.
The enduring climate crisis, along with recent rises in energy costs and gas shortages, sets the backdrop against the pressing need to connect more new sources of low carbon generation. Alongside climate concerns, there is an increasing focus on understanding the value of protecting our natural world, and our own impacts on its longevity.
As the year draws to a close, it is a good time to pause and reflect on the year that’s been and to look ahead at the one to come.
2022 has seen significant upheaval in the global energy market which has had knock on effects on the energy system, and ultimately on the bills of consumers too. Despite this, in many ways our focus remains the same – delivering a clean energy transition is the surest route to long-term security of supply, energy resilience and affordability
In total, 32.5km of 3m diameter tunnels are being constructed deep below the road network between Wimbledon and Crayford. UK Power Networks, the electricity distribution company which distributes electricity to consumers in the London area, requires National Grid to build a new connection to its high-voltage electricity transmission network.
