What do lineworkers do?

When you switch on the lights or boil the kettle, electricity travels from generators like wind farms or power stations along overhead power cables – known as lines - to get to your home.

It's important that electricity is available 24/7, not just to charge our phones and keep our homes heated, but to run hospitals, schools and transport systems. So those overhead lines must be kept resilient against all kinds of weather and repaired if they’re damaged or experience a fault.

We are pleased to see Ofgem continuing to recognise the need for significant levels of investment in networks, and the requirement for an investable framework to support its delivery.

The Draft Determination covers Ofgem's proposed decisions on awarding allowances for a subset of the projects included in our submission, with the remainder expected to be confirmed through in-period processes. As such, we continue to expect to invest around £60 billion over the 5 years to March 2029 across the Group.

The funding will enable the club to install solar panels on the roof of its cricket pavilion, a significant initiative that promotes sustainability and reduces energy costs for the club.

The grant will benefit nearly 1,000 members of both the cricket and hockey clubs, whilst contributing to the club's longer term financial stability. The installation of solar panels is expected to generate an estimated £6,000 in annual energy cost savings, allowing Bexley Cricket Club to reinvest in community activities and further promote sports and recreation.

Members of the North Wessex Downs VIP project team recently donned their walking boots and successfully completed the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge, raising over £5,000 for the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity.

The intrepid team including colleagues from National Grid and Balfour Beatty, began their 4-hour 20-minute ascent of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) in the dark at 3:30am, arriving at its peak in time to enjoy sunrise.

The main construction compound will be used throughout the construction phase for site offices and the delivery and storage of materials. Once construction of the project is complete, the compound will be removed and the site restored to a condition suitable for return to its original use.

From the start of July, you may notice more activity at the compound site as preparatory works continue. Upcoming works, which will be carried out by Balfour Beatty on behalf of National Grid, will include:

A team of South Wales-based overhead electricity line engineers is set for a starring role in the new More4 series Matt Baker’s British Isles.

The Countryfile presenter’s new show takes viewers across the four nations, celebrating the people and places that make up modern Britain.
