National Grid has completed the award of its High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) civil works supply chain framework, with £12bn worth of agreements confirmed.

National Grid has connected the UK’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) to its transmission network at Tilbury substation in Essex.

The Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) project has named Hitachi Energy as the preferred bidder for converter stations at either end of the link. EGL3 will deliver 2GW of clean electricity, helping to strengthen energy security in the UK.

Twenty-four acres of land in Framfield have been transformed into an eco-rich area benefiting protected species by the National Grid team building a new substation in Little Horsted.

The first supergrid transformer delivery will be made to an electricity substation under construction in Monk Fryston on Sunday 17 August 2025. Once operational, the transformer will help to change the voltage of electricity so that it can be supplied safely to homes and businesses.

National Grid is set to deliver two supergrid transformers (SGTs) to key substations in central and east London this August, as part of ongoing investment to strengthen and futureproof the capital’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
