National Grid seeks views on detailed Weston Marsh substation proposals
- National Grid is inviting local people to share their views on detailed designs for two new substations at Weston Marsh
- The proposed new infrastructure will help connect homegrown, secure energy from more affordable sources and meet growing demand in Lincolnshire.
National Grid is inviting local people to share their views on more detailed proposals for two new substations and overhead lines at Weston Marsh, near Spalding.
The proposals form part of the Grimsby to Walpole project, a 140km electricity connection between northeast Lincolnshire and north Norfolk and is part of The Great Grid Upgrade, the biggest overhaul of the UK’s electricity grid since the 1960s.
Electricity demand in the UK, and in Lincolnshire is expected to double by 2050 and the existing network cannot accommodate the growth. The proposed substations will help connect cleaner, homegrown energy from more affordable sources to the grid while supporting jobs and investment in the region.
The targeted consultation focuses on Route section 5: Weston Marsh Substations A and B. The proposed locations remain consistent with those shared during previous consultations. Local communities and stakeholders are now being invited to comment on detailed designs, landscape and visual considerations, and access and delivery details before planning applications are submitted.
Our proposals for Weston Marsh
National Grid is proposing to build two new 400 kV substations, connected by a short underground cable and linked to the wider Grimsby to Walpole reinforcement through new and modified overhead lines.
Weston Marsh Substation A
The substation is proposed to be located east of Marsh Road near Surfleet Seas End and north of Weston (South Holland district). If approved, it will be positioned close to existing overhead lines to minimise new infrastructure and local disruption, and will be developed in two phases:
Phase 1: Proposed to connect to Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind Farm, providing clean electricity from a more affordable source for 1.6 million homes by 2030.
Phase 2: Completes the substation as part of the Grimsby to Walpole project by 2033.
Weston Marsh Substation B
The substation is proposed to be located north of Stone Gate and east of Marsh Road, near Moulton Seas End junction (South Holland district). If approved, it will connect to the transmission network via new and diverted overhead lines and support homegrown energy security.
Both sites have been carefully sited to avoid local constraints, including a pumping station and a gas pipeline, and will include new planting and landscaping to reduce visual impact.
Ben Ridgeon, Project Director for Grimsby to Walpole said: We’re grateful to everyone who has already shared their feedback during earlier stages of consultation. As we have developed our proposals in more detail it’s important that we listen to local people’s views. The substations are a vital part of the infrastructure needed to connect new sources of homegrown energy, helping to secure Lincolnshire’s energy supply and supporting investment and growth in the region.
