Future engineers from Coleg Menai visit the Eryri VIP project site
During the visit, the students, who are currently undertaking a Level 3 Construction and Built Environment course at the Llangefni campus, were able to experience real-world civil engineering in action.
Bryony Brown, Tunnel Project Engineer on the Eryri VIP project, led the visit which included a presentation from members of the project team and a walking tour of the project site.
The team aimed to provide an experience that would help enhance the students’ understanding of large-scale infrastructure development and teach them about tunnelling techniques, environmental considerations and project management in a live setting.
Coleg Menai has noted its intention to work with the project team to include an Eryri VIP case study in their civil engineering module and we will be facilitating future visits for students to the project site.
Holly Watkinson, Construction and Civil Engineering lecturer at Coleg Menai, who had arranged the visit and chaperoned the students on the day, said:
This experience was particularly valuable as students will be studying a module on civil engineering next year. Visiting the project site has helped to bridge the gap between classroom theory and industry practice while also inspiring their career aspirations and deepening their technical knowledge.
We would like to thank National Grid and Hochtief for organising such a valuable day.
