Investing in communities

Our infrastructure projects across England and Wales are connecting more secure, cleaner, home-grown energy from more affordable sources.

Communities are at the heart of our work. We have a long-standing commitment to local communities and want to ensure lasting benefits for the people and places we work alongside, and which host our infrastructure.

Investing in lasting, positive change

Where we're building new, above-ground electricity transmission infrastructure, including new substations, converter stations, overhead electricity lines over 1km, and some substation extensions, we'll deliver dedicated community funds.

Tab through the cards

Funds range from £200,000 into the millions, depending on the type and scale of the project.

Each fund is shaped by the community, for the community, to reflect local need and aspirations.

Investing in grassroots initiatives

Since 2014, our Community Grant Programme has supported local organisations and charities in areas impacted by National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) operations across England and Wales.

The programme awards grants of up to £20,000 for local, grassroots projects, to support communities affected by construction activity, upgrades or essential maintenance. Grants are available where projects fall outside Community Fund eligibility criteria.

Investing time

We're encouraging and supporting our employees to complete 500,000 hours of community volunteering by 2030.

Our employee volunteering programmes create local impact, strengthen communities and inspire positive change. We also require our supply chain partners to embed social value into construction plans, including schools and skills outreach, volunteering, and local environmental projects.

Investing in affordability

Our £13.8m Grid for Good Energy Affordability Fund supports households in the UK and the US that are struggling with energy costs.

Launched in 2025 and initially running for three years, £3.5m per year is donated to charities and organisations providing immediate financial relief to vulnerable households in England and Wales. Early recipients include Affordable Warmth Solutions, Fuel Bank Foundation, National Energy Action and the National Energy Foundation.
