We are in the midst of an energy revolution and National Grid has a central role to play in this fast-changing energy landscape. We’re working to meet ambitious low-carbon energy targets, connect new sources of energy to the people who use them, and find innovative ways to enable the decarbonisation of heat and transport.

The Hinkley Connection Project is a new high-voltage electricity connection between Bridgwater and Seabank near Avonmouth. It is a significant investment in the region’s electricity network and will enable us to connect new sources of low-carbon energy to homes and businesses, including Hinkley Point C, EDF Energy’s new power station in Somerset.

It will play a vital role in delivering electricity safely, efficiently and reliably, and support the UK’s ambition to achieve its net zero by 2050 target.

The new connection will be 57 kilometers  long – consisting of 48.5 kilometers of overhead line and 8.5 kilometers of underground cable through the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

We are also making significant changes to the local electricity network by removing 67 kilometers of overhead line.

We are constantly looking at new and innovative ways to minimise the impact of our project on the local community and the environment. Not only are we constructing what will be the world’s first operational T-pylons, we are also exploring different, more sustainable approaches to construction that potentially reduce traffic and impact on the environment.
