April 2026 update

The proposed Walpole B substation is a shared connection point for multiple National Grid projects. These include Eastern Green Link (EGL 3) and Eastern Green Link (EGL 4) along with Grimsby to Walpole. As a result, there is an overlap between the projects in the Walpole area.

Following consultations last year and in 2024, NGET is now undertaking a targeted joint consultation on behalf of EGL 3 and EGL 4 and Grimsby to Walpole. The targeted consultation runs from Thursday 9 April to Monday 11 May 2026.

Further to feedback, assessments and surveys additional land has been identified that may be required.

The changes we are presenting would not fundamentally change our proposals from what has been shared. As a result, we are seeking feedback from affected landowners, relevant statutory bodies and relevant Parish Councils.

Consultation materials are available to view on the Document Library page of the project website. The interactive map has been updated to reflect the areas covered by this targeted consultation.

EGL 3 and EGL 4 are undertaking a targeted consultation on changes to the project along their route. To view details of that wider targeted consultation, please visit their website.

About Grimsby to Walpole

Grimsby to Walpole is a 140 km overhead line between Northeast Lincolnshire and North Norfolk, needed to reinforce the network, and to connect new sources of electricity planned in the area, including offshore wind, solar, gas-fired generation, interconnectors, battery storage and subsea links from Scotland.

You can read more about the project on Our proposals page or view our Interactive map.

About The Great Grid Upgrade

The Great Grid Upgrade is the largest overhaul of the grid in generations, enabling the transition to a more secure, reliable energy future. It will enable us to carry more renewable energy from where it is generated to where it is needed, helping to lower bills and improve the country's energy security.

The Grimsby to Walpole proposals form part of The Great Grid Upgrade, helping to enhance the grid's capacity to handle increased renewable energy, ensuring a reliable and sustainable power supply.

Why this is needed

The way we generate electricity has changed and is continuing to change. The existing network in the region does not have the capacity to deliver the required amount of electricity to where it is needed across the East Midlands. The existing network, built in the 1960s, is outdated and insufficient for new renewable connections. To meet future demands, we need to reinforce parts of the network.

Grimsby to Walpole is one of five new electricity transmission projects being proposed in Lincolnshire. Three are mainly offshore projects. Grimsby to Walpole is an overhead line project. We require these new reinforcement projects so we can continue to deliver a reliable, affordable network into the future, meet the rising demand for electricity and the connection of new renewable energy sources.

These projects will connect our homes, businesses and public services to sources of home-grown renewable energy which can lower our electricity bills and make our country more energy secure.
