Solar will clearly be a key element to this decarbonizing effort. The sun is essentially a massive fusion reactor in the sky that provides enough energy to power our planet with clean, renewable energy many times over. And the cost of this energy is continuously being driven down by incremental improvements in photovoltaic technology and economies of scale.

National Grid plays a vital role in connecting low-carbon generation to the UK transmission network, which can require the development of new infrastructure to support the existing network. At National Grid the scale of construction is significant; from connecting new nuclear power plants such as Hinkley Point C, which will provide low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes, to the creation of the second phase of the London Power Tunnels, a 32km electricity superhighway deep below the capital.

ET has published its Network Innovation Annual Summary report for 2017/18 this week, which covers projects carried out by ET’s innovation team together with research partners from industry and academia; including Cardiff University and University of Southampton.
Explaining the need for events like this, Iliana Portugués, Electricity Transmission’s Head of Innovation, said, “To ensure we deliver the future needs of our customers, we have to work more closely with the rest of the energy industry to design and create the adaptive network we need. No one can work in isolation and be successful. This workshop is a step closer to achieving that change.”
