National Grid cleans up local green space and Canalside

20 volunteers from National Grid’s Willesden and Kensal Green Connection project joined forces with the Wesley Playing Fields parks team in March for a community litter pick, ensuring the area remains a clean and welcoming space for local residents to enjoy.

Wesley Playing Fields plays a vital role in the North Acton community as it is one of few open green spaces in an otherwise industrialised neighbourhood. Over 10 full bags of litter were collected and removed by the team, improving the area for residents and visitors alike.

During the activity, the local park ranger expressed appreciation for volunteers carrying out the litter pick activity as a way to maintain local green spaces throughout the borough. National Grid graduate Ayo, who volunteered for the activity, commented:

We work in such close proximity to the residents of Ealing, and given our project’s activity in the area, we know just how important it is to support community spaces and ensure residents have access to thriving green spaces.

The litter pick activity also extended to the Grand Union Canal, where the team cleared away further rubbish and improved the towpath for pedestrians and cyclists ahead of the second phase of works taking place this year.

Building on this success, the team plans to organise additional clean-up events for green spaces along the project route.

National Grid is committed to working with and supporting the communities in which it works, and are continuing to look for opportunities to collaborate with communities local to the Willesden and Kensal Green Connection project route. As part of this, we are encouraging applications to the Community Grant Programme. Communities across England and Wales who are impacted by the maintenance of existing infrastructure can apply for grants of up to £10,000.
