Leaders at National Grid

We recognise the crucial role that our people leaders and managers play in the health and wellbeing of our colleagues. We aim to empower our leaders to feel confident in supporting health and wellbeing, backed by commitment from our executives to embed our ‘Thriving Together’ ambition.

We have also rolled out ‘Managing mental wellbeing in the workplace’ training, completed by over 90% of our people managers. This training equips them with essential skills to support our colleagues effectively.

Supporting our people

Our main ambition is to support our people in thriving when it comes to health and wellbeing. This includes providing both internal and external services to support our colleagues.

Internally, we offer a range of proactive tools for employees and managers, such as our wellbeing risk assessment framework, wellness action plans and adjustment passport processes. These resources help individuals secure support before concerns escalate into issues. We also offer accredited Mental Health First Aider training and therefore have a number of mental health first aider networks across the organisation, both inig the UK and US.

Our Global Wellbeing Risk Assessment, based on our largest employee survey (Grid Voice), which garners over 80% response rate from employees, enables a detailed approach to managing stress and wellbeing risks organisation wide.

We also offer industry-leading health and wellbeing services, from internal physiotherapy support for our operational and office-based workforce to our Employee Assistance Programme and Occupational Health services.

Additionally, we have enhanced our mental health support in response to ongoing demands and changes, constantly reviewing our provisions to meet our employees’ needs and expectations. We also have private medical insurance available to our staff along with other health related benefits, such as discounted gym memberships.

External work and recognition

At National Grid, we aim to share our health and wellbeing goals and ambitions with the wider industry, helping prospective employees understand our vision.

This includes participation in external working groups through the Energy Network Association, the Business in the Community (BITC) Wellbeing Leadership Team, recently becoming a Beacon EIDA (Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse) member and being a key partner in the UK Mental Health at Work Leadership Council.

We have played an instrumental role in a recent BITC and McKinsey Health Institute publication on the Economic Value Proposition for industry, making a case for the value of wellbeing.

Furthermore, we strive to have our efforts in health and wellbeing validated and assured by reputable third-party organisations. In recent years, we have achieved Silver in the MIND Employer Index and received the Healthiest Employers and Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) awards.

Also after working for several years on domestic abuse awareness in the workplace, National Grid became a Beacon member of EIDA in 2023 and we have also applied for the HESTIA ‘Everyone’s Business’ award, which recognises best practice in domestic abuse support in the workplace.
