National Grid Recognized for National Leadership On Energy Efficiency

WALTHAM, M.A.  – The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy released its 2020 State Energy Efficiency Scorecard this week, and once again National Grid’s service areas — Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York — all ranked among the top five states in energy efficiency.

The ranking scored both Massachusetts and Rhode Island top in the nation for utility and public benefits programs & policies, recognizing National Grid and its partners’ role in developing and administering energy efficiency programs for customers.  For the overall rankings, Massachusetts placed second, Rhode Island was fourth, and New York rounded out the top five.

Reducing energy consumption through energy efficiency and demand response programs is the first pillar of National Grid’s Net Zero by 2050 Plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change on behalf of its customers and communities.

“With an unprecedented number of people working from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, energy efficiency programs that give businesses and households the ability to save money and reduce their emissions are more important than ever,” said Badar Khan, National Grid’s U.S. President. “We’re proud to have spearheaded innovative energy efficiency initiatives during this challenging time to ensure our customers continue to have access to these important clean energy programs.”

As the pandemic took hold earlier this year, National Grid and its partners implemented innovative energy efficiency programs to assist customers during the ongoing pandemic, including virtual home energy assessments for customers in New England – completing more than 23,000 to date.

Since 2015, National Grid’s nation-leading energy efficiency programs have saved over 4.2 million tons of carbon, which is the equivalent of taking approximately 850,000 cars off the road, and saved customers billions of dollars.
