National Grid supports Brixton students reach their potential
National Grid’s Community Grant Programme is supporting students in Brixton through STEM learning.
Grassroots organisation Brixton Wings, located between our Kings Avenue and Bengeworth Road sites, is one of several organisations benefitting from National Grid’s Community Grant Programme (CGP). The programme seeks to strengthen and uplift communities across South London who are impacted by the construction works needed to deliver the London Power Tunnels project.
Brixton Wings, founded in 2010 by parents from disadvantaged backgrounds, supports children and young people through after-school programmes and early intervention initiatives. With funding from the CGP, Brixton Wings was able to continue to deliver their Saturday School STEM focused classes, as well as expanding the programme to offer subjects such as Geography and English. Gabriella, 16, who is currently studying for her A-levels, is one of the 150 beneficiaries of the Saturday School STEM programme, and is interested in studying Aeronautical Engineering at university.
A year after receiving its funding, Brixton Wings reports that their Saturday School STEM programme, which works to enhance schoolwork and exam preparation, continues to have a significant impact on their beneficiaries. Parents of young people participating in the STEM programme have regularly provided positive feedback about the increase in skills and confidence they have noticed in their children.
Since the beginning of the London Power Tunnels project, the CGP has awarded grants to community initiatives and grassroots organisations like Brixton Wings that operate around its project sites, helping to support the communities impacted by our works.
