LPT2

In 2020, National Grid began work on a new network of cable tunnels, stretching 32.5 km across South London between Wimbledon and Crayford. This project follows the success of our original LPT project north of the Thames, which involved building 32 km of tunnels and two new substations across North London between 2011 and 2017.

The construction of this £1 billion project is essential for ensuring the safe and continued supply of electricity across the capital, with the project replacing existing circuits that are coming towards the end of their useful life. Most of these existing circuits are buried beneath the road network and by placing the new cables in deep underground tunnels, we will significantly reduce disruption for Londoners.

These tunnels ensure that future repair and maintenance can be carried out with minimal disruption to traffic, businesses and residents, whilst the size of the tunnels allows for future additional capacity to be made available if required.

Stretching across South London, the 32.5 km tunnel passes through seven London boroughs, running approximately 30 metres below ground. At various points across the route, we are constructing several shafts and headhouses to facilitate access and provide ventilation for the tunnels.
