Hinkley Point

We are close to completing works at Hinkley Point, the beginning of the Hinkley Connection Project route at Shurton substation, next to Hinkley Point C power station. Power generated from Hinkley Point C will be stored and distributed along the overhead line route.

Upcoming construction works

The remaining activity in this area will see the existing overhead lines from Shurton substation upgraded from 275,000 volts to 400,000 volts. The lines will then connect into the southernmost section of new T-pylons at Horsey, north of Bridgwater. This connection will be via a new nine-armed junction pylon. At Horsey, a new underground cable has been installed and energised, which connects Shurton substation to Bridgwater substation. This frees up space for us to connect a new overhead line into the same junction tower.

Hinkley Point timeline

    Completed Mid 2023

    • Construction of Shurton substation

      Work included:

      • The construction of a new substation within the boundary of the new Hinkley Point C power station complex, so we can connect the new power station to the electricity transmission network. This was included in EDF Energy's Development Consent Order, which was approved by the Secretary of State in March 2013.

    Completed Mid 2024

    • Modification of existing overhead lines in the Hinkley Point area

      Work included:

      • Building temporary entrances and access roads to allow construction traffic to enter site from the local highway. You can find more information on our construction information page.
      • Modifying existing overhead lines in the Hinkley Point area, so they connect to the new Shurton substation at Hinkley Point C power station.
      • Building a short connection from Shurton substation to the existing substation at Hinkley Point B.

    2025 to 2026

    • Upgrading the overhead line between Hinkley and Bridgwater

      Work to include:

      • Changing the wires on the existing pylons to upgrade the operating voltage of the line from 275,000 volts to 400,000 volts.
      • Connecting the new overhead line to the existing Hinkley to Bridgwater overhead line at Horsey.

    Thank you

Thank you from everyone working on the project for your patience and understanding as we work to toward completion. This project will play a key role in helping the UK meet its net zero ambitions by transmitting cleaner, homegrown, energy around the UK – enough to power six million homes and businesses.
