Advanced Metering Infrastructure Puts Customers In Control Of Their Energy Use

Through our Advanced Metering Infrastructure program, we’re designing and deploying an integrated system of smart electric meters and gas modules, which enables two-way communication between us and our customers.

This will both help us to manage the grid of the future and improve customer satisfaction by giving customers the tools to better control their energy usage. In total, around 1.7 million smart electric meters and 640,000 smart gas modules will replace the current meter network, which is approaching end of life.

So far, we’ve deployed more than 450,000 electric smart meters in central and eastern New York. In January, we kicked off the next phase of deployment, consisting of over 4,000 customers in Western New York. Later this year, we will also begin deployment of smart meters in Massachusetts.

Mike Mokey, Director of Advanced Metering Infrastructure, said:

Smart meters are the foundation of modernising the grid and delivering on evolving customer expectations and demands. Customers can choose how much to interact with their new smart meter as they enjoy benefits including detailed information about energy use and instant notification to National Grid when there’s a service interruption at their home.

Smart meters offer customers continuous access to their energy usage data so that they can make informed choices. The technology provides information on when and how energy is consumed, helping customers to make decisions about managing consumption and energy efficiency.

Customers will be able to monitor their usage throughout the day, seeing when and where energy is being used. For instance, customers can see which appliances are consuming energy in their homes and the impact they have on their bills. This level of information will help them make informed choices that can save them money, such as the best times of day to run their appliances.
