National Grid Releases Statement on Massachusetts’ Net Zero Emissions Target
WALTHAM, MA – Marcy Reed, President of National Grid Massachusetts, issued the following statement regarding the decision by Commonwealth of Massachusetts to set a statewide emissions limit of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050:
“Climate change is one of the great challenges facing our society today. This decision by the Baker-Polito Administration is another example of the Commonwealth leading the nation and world on climate change adaptation and preparation, alongside record-setting clean energy procurements and energy efficiency programs.
National Grid looks forward to continuing as an active partner in developing and implementing a roadmap to achieving this ambitious target. It is more important than ever during this challenging time to ensure that this vital transition to a decarbonized future is affordable to the residents and businesses of Massachusetts.”
Background:

- In 2018, National Grid released the Northeast Decarbonization Pathway, a set of policy recommendations to help states across the Northeast achieve a 40% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 80% by 2050 over 1990 baseline levels.
- In June of 2019, National Grid Ventures acquired Geronimo Energy, a leading wind and solar developer in North America. Since that acquisition, Geronimo has executed virtual power purchase agreements for over 400MW of clean energy.
- National Grid is consistently ranked as the top utility for energy efficiency in the country. With our partners in the MassSave program, Massachusetts and National Grid have been named #1 for energy efficiency for nine straight years.
