Community

As part of our commitment to engaging with communities at every stage of the work at Cellarhead, we’ll be updating residents and stakeholders on our progress.

On Wednesday 21 May 2025 we held a public drop-in event at Wetley Rocks Village Hall. At this event we presented details about the planned construction activity ahead of work starting, the temporary closures and diversions to the public rights of way around the site, as well as about our Community Grant Programme.

Community Grant Programme

National Grid’s Community Grant Programme is aimed at community organisations and charities in areas where our work is impacting local people through our operations and construction.

This supports groups and initiatives across a range of areas, from those that provide social, economic and educational benefits, to environmental and conservation projects.

Communities impacted by maintenance and the construction of new infrastructure can apply for grants of up to £20,000.

Our other schemes have helped to support a wide range of local projects, from renovating village halls and funding interpretation boards, to helping football and cricket clubs upgrade their facilities.

Restoring a piece of railway history

From renovating village halls to upgrading sports club facilities, our Community Grant Programme is helping to support a wide range of local projects.

One of the latest groups to benefit is the Moseley Railway Trust, who received nearly £5,000 in funding from the programme connected to Cellarhead substation after making a successful application.

The grant will support the restoration and return to service of ‘Prometheus’, a battery electric locomotive that once supported maintenance work on National Grid’s cables within the Woodhead Tunnel in the Pennines.

Prometheus first came into the trust’s collection in 2015, but recent issues with its battery had prevented the locomotive getting back up and running.

That’s changed thanks to volunteer Dan Warner who’s worked with the Moseley Railway Trust for more than eight years, since he was 13. Dan saw an opportunity to bring Prometheus back to life using the programme, taking the application on himself and steering conversations on behalf of his fellow volunteers.

The funding has been very timely for Dan and the team as the trust gears up towards the opening of its brand new museum in Apedale this summer, which will pay tribute to the area’s rich railway heritage.

Designed to be hands‑on and interactive for visitors, the museum will feature three working railway tracks inside the building, with Prometheus set to play a key role in helping to move the exhibits in and out of the museum building safely and sustainably.
