National Grid supports students at New City College Employers Forum

National Grid joined leading construction and infrastructure employers at New City College’s STEM Employers Open Forum in Hackney to help inspire and support the next generation of industry professionals.

Working alongside organisations including Taylor Wimpey, Aston Group, Vistry and Wates, National Grid staff met with more than 142 students studying electrical installation, plumbing, carpentry, brickwork, engineering and construction management.

The event gave students a valuable opportunity to speak directly with employers about apprenticeships, work experience placements, and future career pathways within the construction and infrastructure sectors. Through informal conversations and networking sessions, they gained a better understanding of the skills, qualifications and experience employers are looking for when recruiting new talent.

Employers also reviewed students’ CVs and shared practical guidance on interview preparation, communication skills, and how to present themselves confidently. These face-to-face sessions helped students strengthen their approach and better understand the opportunities available across the industry.

National Grid colleagues spoke about careers within the energy sector and the wide range of roles available through major infrastructure projects, from engineering and project management, to construction, environment, and community engagement.

Events such as the Employers Open Forum form part of National Grid’s wider commitment to creating opportunities for communities along the North London Reinforcement project route. By connecting students with employers and showcasing the breadth of careers across the energy, construction and infrastructure sectors, National Grid is helping to equip young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to pursue future employment.

Alison McCormack, Community Liaison Officer at National Grid, said:

It was fantastic to meet so many motivated and enthusiastic students at New City College. The future of our industry depends on the talent coming through, and events like this give young people a real insight into the opportunities available to them. At National Grid, we’re committed to supporting the next generation and helping them build the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the energy sector and beyond.

Alongside delivering critical infrastructure upgrades, National Grid is committed to supporting local communities through skills, education and employment initiatives. Working closely with schools, colleges, and training providers is central to this approach - helping to inspire future careers in engineering and construction while creating a positive long-term legacy across the project area.
